Good news for all avid sailors in the Middle East. My friend at Showtime Arabia who I have just seen on the press boat for the UBS Defender Trials has just confirmed that America’s Cup Act 13, the Louis Vitton Cup and the America’s Cup itself will all be shown live on Sportsnet World (or whatever it will be called then as they are rebranding apparently).

Apparently they’ve got the Premiership rights as well but who knows what that is…

UBS Defender Trials

So today is the first day of the first of Alinghi’s defender trials to decide which of Alinghi’s 38 strong sailing squad will represent the defender in the America’s Cup. DIMC is a hive of activity at the moment with spectators all over the place. The press conference is taking place as I write this (I’ve got to at least look like I’m doing some work in the office occasionally so I can’t really go…), so more on what is officially going on will come out on websites around the world soon.

As some of you may have noticed this has been my first post for some time as I’ve been too busy actually sailing and working rather than just writing about sailing. Its certainly been a bit different from the last couple of years. Hopefully I can find the time and the motivation to keep posting a little bit more from now on, although with the Maktoum Sailing Trophy and the boat show looming on the horizon it is looking a little bit sketchy at the moment.

Losing two races in a day doesn’t happen too often to the defender, Alinghi, so the final day’s racing in the round robin of Louis Vuitton Act 12 must have seemed like quite a slap in the face for the Swiss.

What is the oldest yacht club in the USA?

I have heard several YC’s claim to be the oldest in USA including the New York Yacht Club (Newport RI), Boston Yacht Club (Marblehead, MA), American yacht Club (Newburyport, MA). Anyone know for sure? Just curious.

What monthly maintenance needs to be done to a 55ft yacht other than mechanical maintenance? What will it $$?

I am thinking about buying a 55 ft yacht and I am wondering how frequently I need to clean or paint the bottom of the boat. I am used to a smaller boat that is garage stored and I am wondering what kind of maintenece I will have with a boat kept in the water at the mairina. I am located in Los Angeles.
The hule is fiberglass and it sits in salt water.
